Review: Dutch Uncles, Spanky Van Dyke's

This is Nottingham -- I popped into the venue the morning of the gig to check on stage times and was greeted by a quizzical look from the bar staff. "They seem to have a broad demographic this band," said barman Tom as he checked the schedule, clearly noting I was at the upper end of the age bracket. "Why does everyone like them?" Watching the Dutch Uncles that evening I'm going to go for the universal appeal of the xylophone. You just don't see it enough in popular music. Then there's lead singer Duncan's snake-hipped swaying that clearly says it's okay to dance awkwardly. Or not at all and just nod at the wonderfully weird rhythms and time changes that make us oldies think of Talk Talk and XTC and Sparks and maybe the young 'uns who've embraced the eclecticism of Everything Everything agree that it's alright that my dad likes this. A teen at the front has a Morrissey quiff, complete with glasses and hearing aid, and I feel wholly reassured. Everyone beams as they play 'The Ink' and I conclude that Dutch Uncles: kids and grown-ups love them so… Reported by This is 18 hours ago.
